Huffing and Puffing at First

by

Giant’s First Baseman, Aubrey Huff, has been struggling at the plate this season.  Compared to the other First Basemen in the league with a minimum of 300 plate appearances Huff is dead last in On-Base Percentage (.290) and Slugging Percentage (.361) and 17th out 20 in Batting Average (.236).  Huff is responsible for 335 of the 359 At-Bats by Giants First Basemen in 2011.  Compared with the total RBI and Hits produced by First Basemen on National League teams with winning records the Giants are last in RBIs (40) and 5th out of 8 in Hits (85).

Some are calling for Brandon Belt to be called back up to San Francisco and relieve Huff at First Base.  While Belt’s sample size this year in the Majors is small (only 57 At-Bats) his numbers pale in comparison to Huff’s, who, shockingly, is hovering right around the team average for Batting Average and Slugging Percentage and actually has a higher than average On-Base Percentage!

With the trade deadline fast approaching what should the Giants do about First Base?
