Keys to the Game: Indians Vs Tigers, August 19, 2011

August 19, 2011

Only 1.5 games back of the Detroit Tigers for first place in the AL Central, the Cleveland Indians look to gain ground in the division during a critical three game series this weekend at Comerica Park.  While both of tonight’s starting pitchers appear to have similar statistics in 2011, with a Strikeout/BB ratio of 4.05, Cleveland’s Josh Tomlin (12-5, 3.97 ERA) has much more command over the strike zone than Detroit’s Max Scherzer (12-7, 4.37 ERA), who has a lowly Strikeout/BB ratio of 2.89.

Tonight’s game, this series, and even the race for the AL Central pennant could hinge on the production of each team’s Cabrera.  Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera has more RBIs, Hits, HRs and a 147-point higher OPS than Cleveland’s Asdrubal Cabrera this season.

However, Asdrubal has batted in nine runs during his current eight-game hitting streak and his hot bat could help propel the Indians to first place in the AL Central for the first time July 18th.
