Will The Tigers Clench The AL Central?

September 6, 2011

Yesterday marked the beginning of the final series that the Indians will host their AL Central rival, the Tigers, at Progressive Field. The Indians, who are 6.5 games behind the first place Tigers, have a 5-1 record at home versus the Tigers. Although the Indians have played well during their last few sets, the Tigers have remained hot. American League Cy Young candidate, Justin Verlander, is scheduled to pitch during Wednesday’s game, which will likely cause the Indians to struggle. Verlander has a 1.75 ERA over his last 19 turns. Take a look at how the Tigers have faired at Progressive Field. Should the Tigers sweep the Indians, will this mark the end of the playoff hopes for the Tribe?

AL Cy Young Race

August 31, 2011

Last night CC Sabathia finally got the Red Sox monkey off his back. With a dominant two Earned Runs and 10 Strikeout 6.0 inning performance, Sabathia (18-7, 2.99 ERA) has reasserted himself into the AL Cy Young Conversation. However, Sabathia will be fighting an uphill battle against the perennial Cy Young front runners Justin Verlander (20-5, 2.38 ERA) of Detroit and Jered Weaver (15-7, 2.28 ERA) of the Los Angeles Angels. Compare the three Aces’ numbers:

ERs Allowed (Blue), Strikeouts (Orange) & Walks (Green)

With one month left in the season Justin Verlander appears to be pulling away from the pact.  Verlander is leading the Majors in wins (20), Strikeouts (218) and WHIP (0.90) and tied, with Sabathia, for the AL lead in pitching WAR with 6.2.  Can Sabathia or Weaver catch Verlander down the stretch?

Keys to the Game: Tigers Vs Rays, August 22, 2011

August 22, 2011

Tonight the AL Central leading Detroit Tigers will open a four game series with the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.  The opening game will feature a fantastic pitching match up, as Detroit’s AL Cy Young contender Justin Verlander (18-5, 2.31 ERA) will square off against the 6-foot-nine, Jeff Niemann (8-4, 3.29 ERA) of Tampa Bay.  Since returning from a back injury on June 20th, Niemann is 7-0 in 10 starts and has actually given up two fewer Earned Runs than Verlander has over his last 10 trips to the mound.

ERs Allowed (Blue), Strikeouts (Orange) & Walks (Green)

While the Tigers have the more productive offense, the Rays have a better record and have only allowed only 484 Runs this season, the fewest in the American League.  Compare the production of tonight’s starting lineups for Detroit and Tampa Bay.

DET: RBIs (Blue), HRs (Orange) & Hits (Green)

TAM: RBIs (Blue), HRs (Orange) & Hits (Green)

With two dominant pitcher on the hill, runs will be at a premium tonight.  Expect the first team to score a couple of runs in a single frame to earn the victory.

August 1, 2011

With two months left in the regular season three pitchers have emerged as contenders for the American League Cy Young.  Detroit’s Justin Verlander the League leader in strikeouts (178) and wins (15), New York’s CC Sabathia, the League leader in wins (15) and Los Angeles’ Jared Weaver, the League leader in ERA (1.88) are neck to neck to neck in the race for the League’s top pitching honor. See how the pitchers compare

Strikeouts (Blue), Walks (Orange) & Earned Runs (Green)

Check out their WHIP: Verlander Sabathia Weaver

Verlander and Weaver squared off yesterday with the Tigers getting the 3-2 victory as Verlander was four outs away from recording his second no-hitter of the season.  Sabathia will seek his 16th win when he takes the mound in the South Side of Chicago tonight.  Come October which hurler will collect the hardware?  More importantly though, which ace will still be pitching?
