Keys to the Game: Red Sox V Blue Jays, September 5, 2011

September 5, 2011

After losing two straight series last week and relinquishing first place in the AL East, the Boston Red Sox hope a trip north of the boarder will get them back to their winning ways. It will help that their Ace, Josh Beckett (12-5, 2.54 ERA) will take the hill this Labor Day. While Beckett’s career ERA against Toronto is a monstrous 6.57, he only allowed run earlier this year against the Blue Jays and is seeking his fourth straight victory. Toronto will counter with Rookie Henderson Alvarez (1-2, 3.52 ERA), who earned his first Major League win by pitching eight shutout innings in his last start. Compare today’s starting pitchers over their last five starts.

ERs Allowed (Blue), HRs Allowed (Orange) & Strikeouts (Green)

Both clubs boast powerful Dominican sluggers.  Toronto’s Jose Bautista is leading the Majors with 40 Home Runs, his second consecutive 40 Home Run season, and his incredible 8.0 WAR is the highest in the Majors.  Meanwhile, Boston’s DH, David Ortiz, has been on an absolute tear in his last 11 games, hitting .462 with four Home Runs.  Check out Bautista’s and Ortiz’s numbers since August 24th.

RBIs (Blue), Home Runs (Orange) & Total Bases (Green)

Will Bautista be able to pad his MVP caliber stats against Beckett or will Ortiz and the rest of the Red Sox’s big bats rock the rookie at the Rogers Centre?

August 26, 2011

How many Extra Base Hits will Jose Bautista have against the Rays this weekend?

Desert Derby

July 11, 2011

Tonight is the League’s annual showcase of the Long Ball.  This year’s participants were chosen by American League Captain and 2010 Home-Run Derby Champion, David Ortiz and National League Captain and the 2009 Derby Champion, Prince Fielder.  Ortiz chose an all AL East squad of his Boston teammate Adrian Gonzalez, New York’s Robinson Cano, and the Major League leader in Home Runs (31) Toronto’s Jose Bautista.  Matt Holliday of St Louis, Matt Kemp of Los Angeles and Fielder’s Milwaukee teammate Rickie Weeks will represent the National League.  While a few of the Major League’s most productive sluggers are absent, particularly the Yankee’s duo of Curtis Granderson (25) and Mark Teixeira (25), the eight participants tonight are no offensive slouches.

Home Runs (Blue), Hits (Orange), RBIs (Green)

Bautista has been putting up stellar offensive number in the Rogers Centre and on the road, leading the Majors in both home and road home runs.  Interestingly, the Boston duo of Ortiz and Gonzalez have been more offensively productive outside of Fenway Park so for in 2011.

Away

Home

The great news for the participates, and the fans, is that Chase Field is one of the most hitter friendly parks in the Majors with a Home-Run Park Factor of 1.293.  Hopefully for the fan’s sake, sorry participates, Chase Field’s retraceable roof stays open tonight for the contest so we can see many balls soar into the stands.

See how the sluggers are hitting
