Epic Collapse?

September 27, 2011

With two games left and tied for the AL Wild Card, the Boston Red Sox could easily experience the largest collapse in Major League history. On September 1st, the Red Sox were first in the AL East and had a 9 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays. Flash forward 25 games, and the Red Sox have a very real chance of missing the playoffs. What has happened to the once mighty and dominant Boston?

Well, their offense is still the most potent in the Majors, as they are scoring 5.4 Runs per game in September, which is identical to amount they scored per game up to August 30th. However the Red Sox are not scoring timely runs. Half of their six wins this month, yes six, have come from lopsided 14-0, 18-6, 18-9 victories. Meanwhile, they have lost five one-run games in September. However, the true cause of this monstrous collapse is their pitching. Boston has allowed 6.44 Runs per game in September, compared to the 4.18 Runs per game they allowed through the first 135 games. Check out the horrific numbers from Boston’s starting pitching this month.

ERs Allowed (Blue), Strikeout (Orange) & Walks (Green)

John Lackey has a gargantuan 9.12 ERA and dismal strikeout to walk ratio of 1.17 this month. Jon Lester has a 5.96 ERA and staff ace, Josh Beckett, has allowed six Earned Runs in back to back starts.

With Erik Bedard, who has only one win since being acquired from the Mariners at the trade deadline, and Jon Lester scheduled to start in the last two regular season games, can the Red Sox prevent one of the most epic collapses in baseball history?

Keys to the Game: Rays Vs Red Sox, August 17, 2011

August 17, 2011

After splitting a day-night doubleheader yesterday, the Rays and the Red Sox will wrap a three game series this afternoon at Fenway.  The Red Sox will send John Lackey to the mound.  Lackey has recently turned his season around going 6-0 with a 3.92 ERA in his last seven starts and looks to cement his place as the third starter in the Boston Rotation.

ERs Allowed (Blue), HRs Allowed (Orange) & SO (Green)

Tampa will counter will David Price (10-10, 3.76 ERA) who has fared well against the Red Sox in his career, going 5-3 with a 3.55 ERA in eight starts.  However, he has given up 11 Home Runs in those eight games!

ERs Allowed (Blue), HRs Allowed (Orange) & SO (Green)

Red Sox Center Fielder and MVP candidate, Jacoby Ellsbury, homered in both games yesterday to drive in four of the five the Red Sox Runs.  Tampa Bay’s Center Fielder is no slouch either as B.J. Upton scored two and drove in another in yesterday’s nightcap.  Compare the production of the Center Fielders this season:

RBIs (Blue), HRs (Orange) & Stolen Bases (Green)

Who will win the rubber match in this decisive AL East series?
