Keys to the Game: Padres Vs Diamondbacks, September 8, 2011

September 8, 2011

With only 19 games left it appears that the Arizona Diamondbacks will win their first NL West Pennant since 2007. One of the main reason the Diamondbacks have made the transition from worst to first has been the phenomenal pitching of emerging staff ace, Ian Kennedy (18-5, 2.96 ERA). Kennedy seeks his NL leading 19th win tonight when Arizona opens a four game set against the Padres at Chase Field. Over his last 11 starts Kennedy is 10-1, with a 2.25 ERA. Check out Kennedy’s excellent last eleven starts.

The big bat of Justin Upton has propelled the Diamondbacks to the top of NL West.  Two of Upton’s 28 Home Runs this season have come against tonight’s Padres starter Cory Luebke (5-8, 3.29 ERA).  Diamondback Catcher, Miguel Montero is another integral part of the high powered Arizona Offense. Montero is currently on a 15 game hitting-streak in which he is batting .345 with a 1.000 OPS.  Check out Montero’s numbers during his steak.

Hits (Blue), RBIs (Orange) & Total Bases (Green)

With Kennedy on the hill and Upton and Montero hitting the rubber off the ball, can the Padres possibly slow down the Dbacks’ playoff express?

Welcome to First Place

August 12, 2011

With last evening’s late inning heroics, the Arizona Diamonds maintained sole possession of first place in the NL West for the fist time since June 24th.  Paul Goldschmidt tied the game with a two run Home Run on Arizona’s last out in the ninth inning.  In the tenth Chris Young sent a three run shot over the left field fence as well to give Arizona a 8-5 win over Houston.  The key to the Diamondbacks reclamation of first place has been their high powered offense.  Since June 25, the Diamondbacks have out scored the second place San Francisco Giants 185-146 and knocked in 20 more Home Runs.  Compare the offenses:

Tonight the Diamondbacks open a three game series against the New York Mets at Chase Field.  With their ace, Ian Kennedy, on the mound the Diamondbacks may not have to rely on their big bats tonight to continue their winning streak.  See how their offenses stack up:

Will the snakes extend their divisional lead this weekend?
