Keys to the Game: Yankees Vs Rays, September 26,2011

September 26, 2011

One game back of the Boston Red Sox for the AL Wild Card Race, the Tampa Bay Rays must win this upcoming series with the New York Yankees, something they haven’t done all year, if they hope to keep their post-season aspirations alive. Tampa will send their best pitcher, James Shields (15-12, 2.84 ERA), to the the hill tonight. However, Shields has not fared well against the Yankees this year with the Rays dropping all three of his starts. Even worse, Shields is 4-11 with a 4.29 ERA in 19 career starts against the bombers. Check out Shields’ number against Yankees for his career.

ERs Allowed (Blue), HRs Allowed (Orange) & Hits Allowed (Green)

The Yankees will start Rookie Reliever, Hector Noesi (2-1, 4.14 ERA). Noesi has had success against the Rays, allowing two Earned Runs in 8.2 innings this season.

The Rays could have the advantage at the plate tonight, as the Yankees should be fatigued from the 23 innings they played against Boston yesterday in a day-night double header. Compare the production of the Yankees’ and Ray’s starting lineups tonight.

RBIs (Blue), Runs Scored (Orange) & Total Bases (Green)

Even though the Yankees will field a more productive lineup this evening, the Rays will have much fresher legs. One must wonder if Joe Girardi will begin to rest his starters and give the Rays a chance of overcoming the largest September deficit in history?
