Keys to the Game: Cardinals Vs. Astros, September 26, 2011

by

The St. Louis Cardinals have received a gift from the scheduling Gods, as their last three games will be against the Major League’s worst team, the Houston Astros. Even more fortuitous for the Red Birds is that the Braves, who have a one game lead for the NL Wild Card, wrap their season up against baseball best, the Philadelphia Phillies. The Cardinals will need another stellar outing from tonight’s starter Jamie Garcia (13-7, 3.45 ERA), who hasn’t lost in over a month. However, Garcia has never defeated the Astros, and has 5.51 ERA in three starts against Houston his year. Wandy Rodriguez (11-11, 3.51 ERA) will take the hill for Houston tonight. Rodriguez defeated St. Louis earlier this season, but is 6-11 with a 3.58 ERA in 18 career starts against the Cardinals. Compare Garcia’s and Rodriguez’s numbers this season.

The Cardinals are 8-4 against the Astros this year and have outscored them 65 to 45. Check out how St. Louis’ and Houston’ offenses stack up.

If the Cardinals can take care of business against the Astros, baseball fans could potentially be treated to one-game playoff between St. Louis and Atlanta for the NL Wild Card.
