The ‘Sandman’ Rivera goes his for 600th save tonight

It is simply impossible to overstate how good Mariano Rivera has been throughout his career.  Rivera or “Mo”, has long has entered games to the Metallica song “Enter Sandman”, has been a constant in the Yankees’ five world championships since 1996.  Simply put, he  is the greatest relief pitcher in baseball history, pitching with incredible success in the modern steroid era of the late 1990’s-2000’s.  Here are a couple of quotes attributed to Yankees’ opponents over the years.

Former All-Star Mike Sweeney said this of Rivera: “You know what’s coming, but you know what’s coming in horror movies too. It still gets you.” Tom Kelly, the former manager of the Minnesota Twins, said in 1996 of the then rookie Rivera: “He needs to pitch in a higher league, if there is one. Ban him from baseball. He should be illegal.”

Tonight he goes for the next accolade on the way to Cooperstown when he tries for save number 600 tonight in Seattle as the Yankees battle the Seattle Mariners.  This year, at 41 years of age, he has been as good as ever. As a closer, he has thrown 56 innings this year. Check out his 2011 numbers here
