Woe is Reyes

New York Mets’ Shortstop and NL MVP candidate Jose Reyes has been placed on the 15-day Disabled List for the second time this season due to a nagging hamstring.  The NL leader in Batting Average (.336) and Runs Scored (80) heavily relies on his speed as he has 34 Stolen Bases and leads all of the Majors in Triples (16).  While Reyes will probably be the most highly sought after free agent this off season, interested teams must take into account how the large Citi Field inflates Reyes’ number of Triples.  Compare Reyes’ home and away production this season.

Hits (Blue), Total Bases (Orange) & Triples (Green)

At home Reyes averages 1.6 bases per hit opposed to 1.43 bases per hit on the road.  Surprisingly, the Mets don’t benefit from the extra bases Reyes hits at home as they are 24-30 (.444) at Citi Field and 33-27 (.550) outside of Queens.  Currently, the Mets are 9 games back of Atlanta for the Wild Card.  With their most productive player out for the next two weeks, how long can the Mets keep their faint playoff hopes alive?
